Balance Sheet

The Bigger Picture In Selling Your Business

Balance sheet is a summary statement of the financial condition of an organisation as at a particular point in time – usually at the end of a reporting period such as a financial year, half-year or quarter. In other words, it is a report of a company’s assets, liabilities and owners’ investment (equity). In essence, a balance sheet shows a company’s financial situation by stating what it owns (assets) and what it owes (liabilities). It is expressed as an equation: assets = liabilities + shareholder value.

As a balance sheet does not state the current monetary value of assets and liabilities, they could be overstated or understated above or below their real value.
